One of Canada’s leading pianists, Stéphane Lemelin has maintained an active career as a soloist and chamber musician for over five decades, performing across North America, Europe, and Asia. His playing has been widely praised for its sensitivity, refinement, and musical integrity.
His repertoire is extensive, showing a strong preference for the German Classical and Romantic traditions, as well as a deep affinity for French music. This is reflected in his more than twenty-five recordings, which include works by Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Poulenc, and Roussel, as well as by lesser-known French composers such as Samazeuilh, Ropartz, Pierné, Migot, Dupont, Dubois, Rhené-Bâton, Rosenthal, Alder, and Lekeu, among others.
Lemelin studied with Yvonne Hubert, Karl-Ulrich Schnabel, Leon Fleisher, Boris Berman, and Claude Frank. He is currently a professor at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, and has previously taught at the University of Ottawa and the University of Alberta. A highly respected pedagogue, he is frequently invited to give masterclasses around the world.
