Anders Åstrand is a renowned Swedish mallet specialist, considered to be a unique voice of both the marimba and the vibraphone. He is a popular and sought-after soloist, performing regularly and giving master classes and clinics throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. He focuses on melodic and rhythmical improvisation, with influences ranging from jazz, Scandinavian folk music, Gregorian chants, and ancient Greek songs. Since 2017, Anders Åstrand has headed the contemporary music/improvisation class at the Orford Music Academy in Quebec, Canada. During 2021 Åstrand has performed and also held numerous seminars and masterclasses online, and has collaborated with, among others, Boston Conservatory of Music and Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity.
The element of improvisation is an essential feature in Anders Åstrand’s compositions. His music can be found in multimedia performances including dance, video projections and fire sculptures. His commissions include compositions for percussion and chamber music ensembles, brass quintets, saxophone quartets, choirs, big band and a marimba concert for symphony orchestra, premiered in 2016 at the Busan Maru Festival, South Korea. Some of his more spectacular compositions include compositions for percussion ensembles featuring ice instruments, as well as compositions for fighter aircrafts, snow trucks, and even buildings.
Åstrand collaborates with several musicians, and he is a member of WÅG (Mattias Wager, church organ, Anders Åstrand, mallets and percussion, and Gary Graden, vocals), Vibes and Base (Mikael Berglund, bass, Anders Åstrand, mallets), and has a mallet duo with Se-Mi Hwang. Åstrand’s percussion ensemble Global Percussion Network has toured extensively in Sweden, Europe, the United States, and South Korea. He regularly performs at PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention). Åstrand performs on numerous recordings, both as a soloist and in collaborations. The records released in 2021 include collaborations with Miles Osland, Vibes and Base, and solo-recordings.
Åstrand has been an international Education Orchestral Consultant for Zildjian since 2008.
Anders Åstrand plays Yamaha instruments, Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth mallets, and Evans drumheads.
