Soprano Nathalie Paulin has established herself as an interpretive artist of the highest order across the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East. Winner of a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Opera Performance, she has collaborated on concerts and in operas with internationally-renowned conductors, including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Roger Norrington, Andrew Parrott, Jonathan Darlington, Hervé Niquet, Bernard Labadie, Robert Spano, Kent Nagano, Mario Bernardi and Andrew Litton.
Critics have been lavish in their praise. Reviewing for The New York Times, Steve Smith noted that “Paulin [sings] with rich tone and compelling emotion,” while Renaud Machart from Paris’ Le Monde writes: “Nathalie Paulin’s diction, musicality and style were impeccable.” Nathalie Paulin was featured by the Opéra de Montréal as Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande (Debussy) and as Norina in Don Pasquale (Donizetti). She held the title role in Handel’s Semele for the Chicago Opera Theater, the Arizona Opera and the Pacific Opera Victoria, as well as the title role in Manon (Massenet) for the Calgary Opera, the Opera de Québec and the Opera Lyra Ottawa.
Nathalie Paulin has also been heard in the roles of Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) for the Vancouver Opera, Antonia in The tales of Hoffmann (Offenbach), Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart) for the Cincinnati Opera, Micaëla in Carmen (Bizet) for the Opéra de Québec, the Calgary Opera and the Opera Tampa, while The Dallas Opera featured her in The Cunning Little Vixen (Janacek), Carmen and The Merry Widow (Lehar).
Nathalie Paulin has appeared with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (Netherlands), at the Wexford Festival Opera (Ireland), and with the Bard Summerscape (New York). Further engagements include Mozart’s Requiem with Toronto’s Tafelmusik as well as with the Alberta Ballet (Calgary and Edmonton), Félicien David’s Lalla Roukh for the Opera Lafayette (Washington D.C. and New York City), Handel’s Messiah in Denver with the Colorado Symphony, the role of Métella in La Vie Parisienne with the Opéra de Québec, Claude Vivier’s Lonely Child for the Vancouver Symphony, Beethoven’s 9th symphony with the Seattle Symphony, the role of Micaëla (Carmen) with the Opera Tampa (Florida), and the title role in Cavalli’s Calisto with the Cincinnati Opera. Recent and upcoming engagements include Handel’s Messiah with the New Jersey Symphony and the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières, the title role in Handel’s Theodora for Vancouver Early Music, the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for the Opera Lyra Ottawa, Beethoven’s Mass in C with Tafelmusik, Mozart’s Requiem for the Symphony Nova Scotia and the Vancouver Symphony, Carmina Burana (Orff) for the Lanaudière Festival, the title role in Leonora (Beethoven) with the Opera Lafayette in Washington D.C. and New York City, and the role of Zerlina in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte for the Vancouver Opera.
Nathalie Paulin has taught voice as well as French mélodie (art song) at undergraduate level since 2008, and also teaches Advanced French Lyric Diction to graduate students at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music.
