George Gershwin Reimagined

Renowned for his versatility and creativity, John Roney offers a fresh perspective on the world of George Gershwin, at the crossroads of jazz and classical music. A multifaceted pianist, he revisits Gershwin’s famous Preludes and Rhapsodies Nos. 1 and 2 with freedom and finesse, while also incorporating iconic standards that have shaped American musical history. Combining improvisation, elegance, and rhythmic energy, this concert highlights the richness and modernity of Gershwin’s writing, reimagined through John Roney’s singular sensibility.

A former teacher at the Orford Music Academy, the artist maintains a special connection with the venue and its audience. His approach—both refined and spontaneous—promises a vibrant evening, where the boundaries between styles dissolve to create a captivating, accessible, and contemporary musical experience.

John Roney
John Roney is one of the most well-known and respected pianists in Canada. His polyvalence is unrivaled, and his virtuosity has earned him a place onstage with musical giants from across the globe and across the entire musical spectrum. With numerous awards and nominations from l’ADISQ, the Juno Awards, the Canadian Jazz Awards and Les Prix Opus, John has participated in more than 80 recordings as a leader, soloist, conductor, accompanist, composer and producer. He has been featured on CBC, Radio-Canada, JazzFM91.1 and the Festival de Jazz de Montreal, and was the artist-in-residence of the Calgary YYC JazzFestival.

John Roney is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Music at the Université de Montréal, where he chairs the Master’s in Jazz program.
