Pianist and composer Anna Valsk concluded her third artist residency at Orford Music in the fall of 2023. Having enjoyed three enriching stays at Orford Music, Anna shares these unique experiences which help shape her artistic work.
Her first artist residency, in 2022, was dedicated to creation and writing, marking the genesis of her album Morphologies. She returned with other musicians in February 2023 to adapt and practice the album’s songs as a full band for the album launch show. Finally, she was back at Orford Music in October 2023, in solo performance mode for the release of Panpan, her new piano EP.
“I got to practice on different pianos. I imagined myself playing with people around me, and kept playing even if I made a mistake,” says Anna. “Each piece has a story, a memory, an emotion, so I tried to reinhabit those emotions.”
Each week spent at Orford Music’s artist residencies was a unique experience, offering Anna an environment conducive to concentration and inspiration. A more relaxed approach marked the third visit. Anna had more time to fully enjoy the natural environment and amenities offered by Orford Music, allowing her to focus on her emotions and deeply connect with her compositions.
“Having somewhere to stay where you don’t have to worry about food, and going for walks every day, these are all great conditions to calm the mind, knowing that you’re about to go share something personal.”
With her upcoming concerts, Anna Valsk continues to charm her audience with the authentic universe of her album Morphologies.
